General Safety:

1. Use gates on stairs. Place gates at the top and bottom of stairs. Make sure that the holes in the gates are small. (A child's head should not be able to fit through.) Never use accordion-type gates that can pinch fingers.
2. Keep plastic bags, cords and small objects away from young children.
3. Constantly supervise children in or near water.
4. Check for fire and burn hazards.
5. Develop a fire escape plan and practice it often. Confirm that fire extinguishers and fire detectors are in working order. (Check yearly and change batteries.)
6. Post emergency numbers in clear view. Keep an updated list for each child that includes telephone numbers for each parent, the child's clinic or doctor, and a close adult neighbor.
7. Call the
Poison Control Center if a child has ingested, inhaled or come into contact with a poisonous substance.
8. Never keep guns in any child-care setting.
9. Store all cleaning products in a cabinet or storage area inaccessible to children.
